Here at Mrs. Peacock HQ, we're proud to have been purveyors of badly-written comedy songs since about 1999.

In case you haven't gotten the gist, Simon Sweetman doesn't like us very much. But we're comforted by the fact that he doesn't seem to like much else about NZ comedy either (particularly not the female comedians, who are apparently "interchangeable").

If you're interested in seeing some female comedians during this year's comedy festival, then we recommend the thoroughly interchangeable Comediettes, whose show, we understand, consists primarily (95%) of references to their vaginas.

(Needless to say you should also come and see Monkey vs. Robot)

UPDATE #1: Completely forgot to mention another all-female show in the festival: A Guide to the Uncool, starring Heidi and Rose. Or is that Rose and Heidi? I'm not certain, as they're so interchangable I can barely tell them apart. Either way if you're in Auckland you should go see them. I'm not sure how often they talk about their parts but I bet it's a lot.

UPDATE #2: Rose tells me that a solid 15 minutes of their show will be parts-related. I make that about 25%. Letting the side down a bit I reckon.

Good times. Needless to say we're both very excited.

I thought that it was important to clarify though that the Monkey (TJ) and Robot (me) won't be interacting in any way during the show. We'll both be doing standup, separately.

Of course depending on how the shows go that could change over the course of the season. It all depends on you! Or something like that.

Monkey vs. Robot

First, the bad news: this year there won't be a full-noise mrs.peacock show in the NZ International Comedy Festival. Not officially, anyway - unofficially you may get your chance to see us... stay tuned for more details soon.

HOWEVER. Jarrod will be appearing in Monkey vs. Robot alongside TJ McDonald, whom you might know from Wellington sketch comedy troupe the Comedy Cure. Monkey vs. Robot will feature Jarrod and TJ doing around half an hour each (give or take) of the finest solo standup comedy they can muster in the remaining time available between now and May.

We're on the road for the 2008 University Orientation tour, along with Jeremy Elwood, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, and Steve Wrigley. Dates are to the right - feel free to come along if and when we get to your town.

We're also doing a few other shows while on tour, including a gig at Fat Eddies in Christchurch, and a few at the Classic in Auckland. Hopefully we'll see you there...

We're performing at the World Buskers Festival in Christchurch at the moment - and our gig on Tuesday night at the Sumner Standup Series in the Sumner Community Centre was reviewed in the Christchurch Press on Wednesday.

Given that we've continued to have full houses since then, I believe we might have found a quote for our Comedy Festival poster this year:

Jarrod Baker

Jarrod Baker is one half of musical comedy act mrs.peacock, one third of musical comedy act The Suave Jockeys, and the only member of non-musical comedy act Jarrod Baker.

Jarrod is also the current President of the New Zealand Comedy Guild. So far, he has yet to grope any interns or start any wars while in this role.

When not doing comedy Jarrod has been known to act, write, be on the radio, and make the web comics Newtown Ghetto Anger and Cone of Science.

This year, Jarrod will be appearing in Monkey vs. Robot (a show in the 2009 NZ International Comedy Festival) alongside the very capable Timothy James McDonald.

Dave Smith

One half of musical comedy duo mrs.peacock, and a talented solo performer in his own right, Dave Smith has been on the comedy scene since 1998.

A graduate of EIT’s drama programme, Dave is the resident technician at Auckland’s Classic Comedy Bar, and until recently was the drummer for punk band Galloping Hooves of the Apocalypse.

A prolific songwriter, Dave is also a former star of reality television, having appeared as a competitor on TV2’s "So You Think You're Funny?"

Dave likes to spend his days playing his guitar, smoking cigarettes and writing about himself in third person.

Comedy-rock duo mrs.peacock (Jarrod Baker and Dave Smith) formed in 2000 and quickly became cult favourites on the Wellington comedy scene with their killer combination of sweet melodies and filthy lyrics.

The duo's reputation for offensiveness garnered them the "most offensive gag" gong at the NZ Comedy Guild Awards in 2005, and in 2006 they took out the same category at the Wellington Comedy Awards.

It's not all filth, however - mrs.peacock also do a nice line in musical parody and consider love songs a particular specialty. You know, for the ladies. What's more, they were the winners of the prestigious Billy T Award for 2007.

If you haven't caught mrs.peacock before, you're in for a treat. And if you have you'll probably be in the front row, singing along.

Reviews have got to be the best part of the Festival. We just love them. There's nothing like the opinion of someone who didn't pay to come to your show and probably isn't part of your target demographic to really warm the cockles of your heart.

Actually we've never had a festival show reviewed before (aside from a one line gripe from Lynn Freeman in the Capital Times about having to miss our show because we didn't start on time) so this is quite a novel experience.

Firstly, Jess Manins of the Lumiere Reader has given us a rather nice review - though she does take issue with the number of poos and wees jokes in our set. In response we'd like to point out that poos and wees are nothing to be embarassed or uncomfortable about. Everybody does them. Even people who've been in terrible accidents and have to use some sort of poo-bag apparatus.

And Simon Sweetman gave us an absolutely glowing review in the Dominion Post, the highlight of which is above. Thanks Simon - you'll always have a special place in our hearts (the full review is not online, but will be posted in comments).

[UPDATE 2]: We've also had an indifferent review from Melody Nixon at Lumiere (who says what we did, but doesn't mention how well we did it - although she did say that our melodies were "sweet"), as well as a a somewhat less than nice one from Kate Chapman at the same site.

Kate says that our "lyrics were not particularly amusing". I guess that's what we get for trying to address the issues. The haters just don't understand that we're doing it all for the kids.

Our recent gig at Comedy Underground was reviewed in Salient - Comedy Underground have reprinted the review for your reading pleasure but the relevant part is this:

Headlining the gig was the superstar musical comedy duo Mrs. Peacock. I have seen each performer individually before but despite having heard their songs I have never heard them perform live together. I was not disappointed. They sang and played like angels with boy band like harmonic perfection but god they were smutty and offensive. Because of their wonderfully boyish charm they somehow pull off singing about things like giving their girlfriend’s father a reach around without actually offending anyone.

And I didn't even need to quote anything out of context to make us sound good, which was choice.

We will be MCing the Wellington semi-final of the RAW comedy competition tomorrow night (Thursday 27 April) at the San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba Street.

2 winners will be chosen on the night to go to the final in Auckland - the semi-finalists include TJ MacDonald, Noor Razzak, Pinchey Murray, Dave Cormack, Alex Hawley, Two Beers and a Yarn, Emma Olsen, and Jon Batt.

Our gig last night at the Green Room, the relaunched monthly comedy night at Kitty O'Shea's, went pretty damn well, we think.

If you live in Wellington, and you're at all interested in comedy, we strongly recommend going along to the next one, which will be on the second Sunday of April (that's the 9th). You might also want to consider going along to Comedy Underground, the new monthly comedy night at Bodega. The first gig, on Sunday March 26, features The Suave Jockeys - an act which includes Matiaha "Mutts" Paku, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer... and me.

Last night, we headlined the comedy night at Vic University Orientation (as foreshadowed below, where we said that we were going to do it).

Actually if you bought a ticket, you'd know that even better than headlining we were one of the "Guests" in "Brendhan Lovegrove and Guests", but lets not get into that now. In any case we closed the show and we think it went well.

Our apologies to any innocent first year students who had their 'ear cherries' popped last night. Think of it this way: it had to happen sometime. And you were better off having it happen with nice guys like us, than with the other sort of guy. I know at least one person there liked us (especially Dave)...

In any case our next gig is this Sunday at The Green Room - hope you can make it along.

We are very pleased to announce that mrs.peacock will be headlining the comedy night at Victoria University's Orientation 2006, hosted by Brendhan Lovegrove. Who is really quite good and has been on TV and performed overseas and stuff and we've seen him lots and we like him and he's very funny.

So come along, why don't you, to the Union Hall on Thursday 2 ~~May~~ March and watch us (along with Cori Gonzalez-Macuer and James Nokise, two of this year's Billy T Award nominees, who are also reasonably funny and in any case are both a bit ethnic and therefore should be given the benefit of the doubt). Tickets are only $10 for students ($15 for grownups) and are available from the Student Union and from both the Manners and Cuba Street branches of Cosmic Corner. We reckon the show will start about 8pm.

UPDATE: As pointed out in comments, I fucked up. Orientation is of course in March, not May. I hope you can forgive the unforgiveable and overlook my typographical mistake.

I'm extraordinarily proud to announce that mrs.peacock has received TWO nominations in the prestigious New Zealand Comedy Guild Awards for 2006.

Of course, both of these nominations are for "most offensive gag" - but we're still very pleased. We received one nomination for "Walking the Line", and one for our new hit "The Flange". Here's hoping it doesn't split the votes too much...

We're also performing at the awards, and I will be co-presenting (along with James Nokise and The Boy With Tape On His Face) the award for "Best Industry Friend".

In a similar vein, we're also one of 9 applicants for the 2006 Billy T Award. The application show takes place on Saturday 14 January, at The Classic - if you're in Auckland, please feel free to come along in support.

mrs.peacock are pleased to announce that they will be competing in "So U Think UR Funny", an upcoming comedy competition being held in sunny Hawkes Bay.

Heats are being held at the Loading Ramp, Havelock North, on Friday 7 October - with 29 acts registered to compete so far. From the heats 10 acts will be chosen to go through to the final on Saturday 8 October at the Napier Municipal Theatre - and whoever wins that will get a return ticket to the UK, open spots at Jongleurs, and introductions to UK comedy agents.

If mrs.peacock win then Dave will have to travel in my suitcase I guess.

In any case, mrs.peacock fans are strongly encouraged to make the pilgrimage to Napier to support the cock. Seriously - it'll be a fucking awesome weekend.

IN OTHER NEWS:
I'll be co-MCing the Wellington Comedy Club at Indigo in Wellington this Thursday 8 September. It's my first time MCing. Be gentle with me.

Dave is also doing semi-regular solo spots at The Classic in Auckland (he works there after all) and is doing some producing and bar managing and that sort of stuff as well. Go see him, and so on.

The deserving winner of So U Think UR Funny was the very talented Mr. Jeremy Elwood. We made it through to the final though, which was nice.

mrs.peacock will be playing this Thursday 14 July (i.e. tomorrow night) at Indigo Bar, 161 Cuba Street, Wellington. It's the first of two farewell fundraisers for the always arousing Ben Hurley who in addition to giving excellent head and being the erstwhile Godfather of the Wellington Comedy Mafia, also won some award or other (I think it might be named after some dead comedian) last year. The Benny Hill award. I think that might be what it was called.

Anyhow, the show will kick off at around 8pm (which in comedy-speak means sometime between 8.30 and 9 - but come early to get a drink and make sure you get a seat). It'll probably cost around 10 bucks, and such talents as Vaughan King and Grant Lobban will also be performing.

mrs.peacock will be performing in Late & Live at the Classic tonight (Saturday 21 May) for the last show of the ODDFELLOWS NZ International Comedy Festival. The show starts at 10pm, at the Classic, 321 Queen Street, Auckland. If you saw our show and liked it, come along. If you missed our show and are regretting it, come along. The final show of An Audience with mrs.peacock was last Saturday and we think it went pretty damn well, all things considered. But we'd like to hear from you, our loving fan base. Please feel free to post your review of our show in comments, below.

While the show is over, however, mrs.peacock live on. We're hopefully performing in at least one "Late & Live" at the Classic this week (hosted by Brendhan Lovegrove) - and we should have some appearances in Wellington and Auckland in June.

All going well, you'll be able to buy some CDs of our delightful child-friendly music at our festival gigs. So bring extra cash, they make great stocking stuffers for Christmas!

What's more, we're hopeful that we should be able to have CDs of Wednesday night's show available for sale at Thursday night's show. More details as they come to hand.

Tickets for our festival shows at the Classic Studio in Auckland on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 May are now available here. We strongly encourage you to do so, as it will make you virile, strong and attractive to both genders.

Tickets are $12/10 (a booking fee may apply). Of course you can also book at a Ticketek outlet near you, or you could just try your luck on the night, but who needs the hassle or uncertainty?

Tickets for our Wellington shows on Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 May are only available at the door (so please arrive early to avoid disappointment - our disappointment).
